  1. ATTACK REIMS AIRFIELD
  2.  
  3. Had the Do 335 been operational before 
  4. January 1, 1945, it would have participated 
  5. in Operation Bodenplatte.  On this day, 
  6. the Luftwaffe launched a surprise 
  7. offensive against Allied airfields in 
  8. Holland, Belgium, and northern France.  
  9. Designed to destroy the Allied Tactical 
  10. Air Forces in these areas, Operation 
  11. Bodenplatte involved nearly 800 
  12. Luftwaffe fighter planes.  The attack was 
  13. very successful against some airfields, 
  14. with 150 Allied planes destroyed and 
  15. another 50 heavily damaged.

  17. However, the operation cost the 
  18. Luftwaffe dearly: nearly 300 German 
  19. aircraft were lost, 151 pilots killed or MIA, 
  20. and 63 pilots captured.  Of the pilots who 
  21. died, 26 were high ranking, experienced 
  22. commanders or leaders.  Also, many of the 
  23. aircraft lost were hit by German flak, as 
  24. their flak installations had not been 
  25. notified of the operation.

  27.                     YOUR MISSION
  28.  
  29. Follow your flight leader as he takes your 
  30. schwarm of Do 335s toward Reims airfield 
  31. to dive-bomb and strafe the structures and 
  32. aircraft there.  A pair of FW 190s will 
  33. provide close escort for you.  You are 
  34. likely to encounter enemy aircraft on 
  35. patrol.  Engage the defenders if 
  36. necessary, but remember that your 
  37. primary mission is to attack the airfield 
  38. itself.
